National Cancer Institute
The National Cancer
Institute coordinates the National Cancer Program, which conducts and
supports research, training, health information dissemination, and other
programs with respect to the cause diagnosis, prevention, and treatment
of cancer, rehabilitation from cancer, and the continuing care of cancer
patients and the families of cancer patients.
The WISER project is
funded by the National Cancer Institute.
Transdisciplinary Research on Energetics
and Cancer (TREC)
TREC is unique in that
it aims to integrate the study of diet, weight, and physical activity
and their effects on cancer by funding research centers that focus on
energy balance (the balance between food intake and physical activity).
The WISER project is
a part of the TREC initiative funded by the National Cancer Institute.
University of Minnesota’s Cancer Center
Advancing knowledge,
enhancing care is the mission of the University of
Minnesota Cancer Center. The Cancer Center fosters this mission by creating
a collaborative research environment focused on the causes, prevention,
detection and treatment of cancer; applying that knowledge to improve
the quality of life for patients and survivors; and sharing its discoveries
with other scientists, students, professionals and the community.
The TREC initiative,
which the WISER project is a part of, is housed within the Cancer Center.
Physical Activity and Health: A Report
of the Surgeon General
This report highlights
what is known about physical activity and health, as well as what is being
learned about promoting physical activity among adults and young people.
The WISER project highlights
one of the research needs within the report: further studying the relationship
between physical activity in adolescence and early adulthood and the later
development of breast cancer.
General Clinic Research Center (CRC)
The General Clinic Research
Centers Program seeks to establish and make available the resources necessary
to conduct high quality clinical research. Centers are intended to provide
the latest support systems and technical tools for health related research
studies.
WISER project participants
will utilize the CRC for required clinic visits.
